Abstract
660,764. Photographic contact - printing apparatus. PATIENCE, W. R., and PATIENCE, E. S. Nov. 23, 1949 [Nov. 24, 1948]. No. 30074/49. Class 98 (ii). Apparatus in which the copy material is fed in contact with the light-sensitive material between a transparent roller and a roller having a soft surface of resilient material, the printing lamp being disposed at the side of the transparent roller opposite the soft surfaced roller. Transparent or opaque originals may be copied by transmitted light or by reflex action respectively. A page of a book may be copied without removing it from the book. As shown, a transparent roller 18 and a roller 25 are supported on shafts journalled in uprights 11, 12. Roller 25 has a solid core thickly covered with rubber or the like which is deeply indented by the roller 18. A tubular lamp 40 is supported at the side of roller 18 opposite roller 25, in a housing supported between the uprights and having a semicylindrical top with sides extending into the vicinity of roller 18, having adjustable baffles contacting roller 18. The rollers are geared together by gears 32, 33 and driven through reduction gearing 35 by an electric motor 34, which may be reversed by a switch 38. The speed of the motor and the current supplied to the lamp 40 are varied by series rheostats 37, 66. The copy and sensitive material are fed between the rollers, being supported before and after they pass through on platforms supported between the uprights. When a page of a book is being copied and the adjacent pages approach the rollers, they press a pivoted bar 75 which moves to operate switch 38, which reverses the motor to retract the copy, and may also switch off lamp 40. The lamp socket 41 is supported in a cup-shaped member 42 mounted in an aperture in the upright 11, which also supports one end of a transparent cylinder 47, surrounding the lamp, the other end being supported by a collar 48, in an aperture in the upright 12. Air, which may first be filtered, is blown through apertures in the member 42 and along the cylinder 47, to cool the lamp. A glass plate 70 may be mounted between cylinder 47 and roller 18 to prevent heat from the lamp from reaching the roller. A cylinder 50 may surround the cylinder 47, mounted on member 42 and collar 48 and rotatable by a knurled disc 51 extending through a slot in the housing. The cylinder 50 comprises three filters which may be placed selectively in the path of light from the lamp to the roller 18 for making colour separation negatives.
