[Class 80 (i).] Relates to rope or cable gearing of the kind described in the parent Specification in which the rope &c. is wound more than once around a driving-drum, axial movement of the points at which the rope reaches and leaves the drum being prevented by carrying the rope upon a chain movable axially as the drum turns. In this Specification, two or more ropes &c. are wound upon one or more chains moved axially by a single traversing device. A single chain 11, Figs. 2 and 3, which may be toothed to engage grooves in the drum, is coiled upon the drum and has two longitudinal grooves in its outer surface receiving a rope 16 at each end of the drum. The lateral faces of the end coils of the chain engage, with some freedom, chains 18 the rollers 17 of which bear against inclined tracks on stationary traversing members 15. Blocks 19 and flanges 93 control lateral movement of the chains 18, and ledges 90 at the top and bottom of the members 15 maintain the chains concentric with the drum. In a modification, the concentricity of the chains 18 is ensured by the use of adjustable split tracks carried by the members 15. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, four ropes 16 are wound in pairs on two chains 11 arranged side by side on worms 58 which are rotated by links 75 connected to a wheel 75<1> loose on a fixed eccentric 77.
