Abstract

Preparations for the medical or cosmetic treatment of the skin are obtained by extracting the skin of a warm-blooded animal with a lipoid solvent such as ether, removing the solvent from the extract by evaporation and incorporating the residue of the extract with a suitable excipient in the form of a lotion, cream, or ointment, or emulsifying it in water with the aid of soap or other emulsifying agent. According to an example an ether extract is made from the skin of a young pig, subcutaneous fat having been removed previously and the skin, unless treated immediately after slaughter, having been steeped in dilute ammonium carbonate solution to prevent autolysis. The residue after evaporation of the ether is either triturated directly with an excipient to obtain an unguent to be worked up to a cream, or is treated with a dilute aqueous solution of sodium carbonate, containing a little antiseptic such as chloreton or tricresol, so as to obtain an emulsion to be added to an excipient.
