Abstract

Refractory metals, e.g. tungsten, are coated with rhenium by heating to a temperature above 2000 DEG C. in the vapour of a rhenium compound, e.g. a rhenium halide, at atmospheric pressure in an atmosphere of neutral or neutral and reducing gas. A single crystal wire of tungsten heated in the vapour of a rhenium compound in an atmosphere of hydrogen and nitrogen is coated with rhenium which also grows as a single crystal and the coated wire may be used as a filament in an electric incandescent lamp.
