Abstract
Zinc chloride is freed from lead, lead chloride, or lead oxychloride by melting it in the presence of excess of zinc and continuously circulating portions of the molten salt through an underlying bath comprising metallic lead until the lead &c. has been extracted. The slag of pure zinc chloride is then removed from the surface of the bath. The operation may be carried out at 730-760 DEG F. The zinc chloride may be that obtained from lead containing zinc as an impurity and obtained for instance in desilverizing lead by the Parke's process, the dezincing step being effected by heating the lead to 650-750 DEG F. and continuously circulating portions of the molten lead through a chlorinating chamber until the zinc chloride slag floating on the molten metal becomes contaminated with lead chloride. From the zinc chloride obtained zinc and chlorine may be recovered for further use in the process.ALSO:The zinc is removed from lead which has been de-silverized by the Parke's process by heating the lead to 650-750 DEG F. and continuously circulating portions of the molten lead through a chlorinating chamber until the zinc chloride slag floating on the molten metal becomes contaminated with lead chloride. The zinc chloride slag is removed and purified by excess of zinc, and may then be treated to recover zinc and chlorine for re-use in the de-silverizing and de-zincing operations respectively.
