[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] Gaseous fuel furnaces.- A uniform heating is maintained along the length of coke oven flues by varying the length of the heating- flame, either by maintaining a constant gas supply and continuously varying the rates of air supply at two or more levels in the flue, or by maintaining a constant air supply and continuously varying the calorific value of the gas delivered at different levels. In both cases the variations in the rates of supply are so made that the total heat supply between two successive reversals of the regenerative system is constant. When a variable quantity of air is supplied at two levels the supplies may be controlled by two rotary valves so interconnected that as one is opening the other is closing. When the calorific value of the gas is varied the supplies for each of the different levels f, g, h is drawn from two sources b<1> b<2>, c<1> c<2>, and d<1> d<2>, and the relative quantities of the gases in the mixtures are varied continuously to give different flame lengths. The quantity of any particular gas used may be kept substantially constant by so arranging the supplies that some heating-walls or groups of flues are receiving the maximum supply while others are receiving the minimum.
