[Class 38 (v).] Arc-extinction takes place by the vapour produced by the are under high-pressure expanding as suddenly as possible, the liquid being such as principally evaporates under the effect of the arc without appreciable decomposition. Expansion chambers of known type may be used, but preferably the orifices are arranged to one side of the axes of the contacts. In Fig. 2, the contacts 16 carry a piston-like member 16 so that, as the latter leaves the cylinder, the vapour in the chamber expands suddenly whereby condensation ensues, thus extinguishing the arc. In Fig. 3, ports 25 are uncovered by cylindrical members 29 on the contacts as the latter move to open position. Semi-conducting liquids may be used, or water, bromine, carbonic acid, nitrogen.
