362,342. Furnace walls. AMERICAN ENGINEERING CO., Aramingo Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A. May 26, 1930, No. 16164. Convention date, April 17. [Class 51 (i). In a furnace wall of the kind comprising tubes through which a cooling medium such as water, mercury vapour, or other liquid or gaseous substance is circulated and having protective blocks associated with the tubes, blocks are arranged between adjacent tubes and adjustable threaded means are interposed between the blocks for forcing the blocks apart and into close contact with the tubes. Fig. 2 shows one form of the invention in which the blocks 2 are held in contact with the tubes 1 by wedge-shape blocks 6, 7 engaging with inclined surfaces on the blocks 2 and drawn together by a bolt 8. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the bolt 8 passes through a bar 15 to which the wedge-shape block 6 is clamped and serves to force the blocks 2 against the tubes. In both the modifications above described the wedge 6 is protected by refractory filling material which interlocks with recesses in the blocks 2 and projections on the wedge. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the wedge 18 is clamped against a yoke 21 engaging with the tubes 1. Fig. 8 shows a further modification in which the blocks 24, 25 are pivoted at 27 and pressed into engagement with the tubes by an extensible screwed link 31.
