Abstract

Walls.-In a retort furnace a movable section is provided in the outer wall, through which horizontal pressure can be applied to the walls of the retort for the purpose of preventing vertical cracks or joints from opening. As shown in Fig. 1 in connection with a vertical retort built up of superposed sections 3 of consistently greater length than breadth, one or both end walls 5 of each section contact with bricks 7, 8 which are pressed inwards by adjustable springs 9, 10. The pressure may be exerted by a pneumatic piston, an hydraulic piston acting through a spring, or by a weighted <PICT:0482659/III/1> <PICT:0482659/III/2> <PICT:0482659/III/3> <PICT:0482659/III/4> lever having on one arm a roller bearing against the brick; and to allow vertical movement of the bricks due to expansion, rollers may be interposed between the spring pressure means and its fixed abutment on the setting. In the construction shown in Fig. 10 a weighted lever 14 acts on a pair of bricks 7, which may be in contact as shown, or slightly spaced, through a wheeled carriage member 15. The joint between the bricks 7, 8 and the setting may be stepped to minimize leakage of gases. In one construction of setting two retorts are arranged in line on opposite sides of an abutment wall, and pressure is applied from both sides of the setting. In another construction, Fig. 13, portions of the two side walls of the retort are made integral with portions of the end wall, which are angled as shown, and the brick 7 is shaped so that it will tend to close the tongue and groove joint 51. When the side walls of the retort are constructed of tiles, pressure may be applied separately to the two walls as shown in Fig. 17. The gaps between the retort walls and the setting are sealed by loose granular material poured into grooves 35. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also a construction in which the end wall of the retort, consisting of wedge blocks inserted between tapered block extensions from the side walls, forms part of the outer wall of the setting, pressure being applied to all the blocks forming the end wall. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
