Our invention relates to an improvement in the means normally used to bridge the ends of the heating-flue walls of a by-product coke oven, and is'more particularly directed to the flash plates which cover the ends of the heating-flue walls and are held in position by the vertical buckstaysof the oven. Hitherto-it' has been found diflicult tomaintain proper joints ybetween the masonry of the flue walls and the flash plates bridging them, due to their diterent coelticients of expansion.
Furthermore, the use of discharge rammers and the openingand closing of the oven doors contribute to the loosening of the joints between the flash plates and the masonry Walls, the constant repair of which adds materially to the operating expenses of the oven.
An object of this invent-ion is, therefore, to design a flash plate ofimproved design,
to insure a substantially gas. tight joint in the end masonry of the heating lues.
A'further object of ,this invention .is to` provide a masonry constructio at the end of the heating f lues, wherein the n rmal joints are suitably masked' for 'the purpose of preventing gas leakage therefrom. j
A further object of this invention is to protect the masonry at the ends of the flue side walls from abrasion by the discharge rammer: l 'In the drawings:

. From the above, it is evident that leakage y ofgases from the heating flues is etectively opposed. In theevent of gasleaking through the tongue and groove joints between the center and terminal bricks, it is prevented from further escape by the'liller bricksl 14, and in the event that gas passes along the line of ,Contact between the filler brick 14 and the terminal bricks 20, it would be finally checked by reason of the flash plate 15 which mbligaces the filler brick andthe terminal end r1c s. v
While we have shown our invention in but one form, it will be obvious to those skilled 1n the art that it is not so limited, but is sus-` ceptible ofvarious other changes and modications without departing from. the. spirit thereof, and we desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereuponas are imposed by the prior art or as are specitically set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
l. In a coke oven heating flue, side walls and end bricks therebetween, the outer faces of the center bricks being substantially flush with the ends of the side walls, filler bricks disposed outwardly of the center bricks and masking the joints between the sidewalls and center bricks, and ashplates embracing the filler bricks and the terminal portions of the side walls.
2. In a coke oven heating flue, side walls and end bricks therebetween, the outer faces of the center bricks being substantially flush with the ends of the sidewalls, filler bricks disposed outwardly of the 'center bricks overlappinff the joints between the sidewalls and center bricks, and flash plates embracing the gg ller bricks, having inwardly projecting V flanges overlapping the line of contact between the terminal portions of the side walls and the filler bricks, the'terminal portions of the side walls being recessed to receive the overlapping portions of the flanges.
In a coke oven heating flue, side walls and end'bricks therebetween, the outer faces of the center bricks being substantially flush with the ends of the side walls, liller bricks disposed outwardly of the center bricks overlapping the joints lbetween the side walls and center bricks, and flash plates embracing the filler bricks, having inwardly projecting flanges overlapping the.
