Abstract
362,285. Jib cranes. SMITH & SONS (RODLEY), Ltd., T. and FAWCITT, E., Steam & Electric Crane Works, Rodley, Leeds. March 18, 1931, No. 8284. [Class 78 (iv).] Overload indicator mechanism of the kind which is operated by the pull on the luffing rope has the rope connected to a weight or spring-loaded lever system operating the indicator in which the leverage is varied by a cam and linkage in accordance with the maximum safe load at different radii. The pointer 1 works over an indicator quadrant 2 and is actuated by an arm 3 connected by a link 4 to a lever 5 working on a pivot 6 and provided with a weight 7 or spring. The end of the luffing rope 8 is connected to links 11 mounted on a pivot 12 on the lever 5. The weight 7 normally overcomes the pull of the luffing rope so that the pointer indicates a safe load. A link 13 is pivotally connected to the upper end of the links 11 and to a bent lever 14 mounted on a pivot 15 on the crane structure and having at its free end a roller engaging a cam 17 having an undulating contour. The cam is connected by an arm 19 and link 20 to the jib 9. The arrangement is such that variations in the inclination of the jib cause variations in the effective leverage of the pull on the lever 5 and corresponding indications of the pointer. In a modification a toggle linkage is arranged between the cam mechanism and the luffing rope linkage.
