361,839. Glass manufacture. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, ET CIREY, 1 bis, Place des Saussaies, Paris, France.-(Assignees of Pond, L. N. ; 1013, Wateree Road, Kingsport, Tennessee, U.S.A.) July 24, 1930, No. 22298. Convention date, July 25, 1929. [Class 56.] Rolling.-Relates to the method of making plate glass in which a quantity of molten glass is poured on to the receiving table of a double-roll machine in contact with the upper roll. The invention consists in giving to this roll, prior to the pouring of the glass on to the table, an initial distortion or warp which is opposite and substantially equal to the distortion caused by the hot glass. The two distortions neutralize one another and the rolls form a glass sheet of even thickness. The Figure shows a machine for making wire glass by rolling two sheets of glass E,by separate pairs of forming-rollers A, B, and consolidating the two sheets into a single sheet by another pair of rollers F, wire mesh E<1> being fed between the sheets as they pass between the rollers F. Water is circulated through the rolls A to cool them, and before molten glass is poured on to the receiving tables D, the rotation of the rolls is stopped. The water cools the lower parts of the rolls more than the upper parts, and this unequal cooling causes the rolls to bend slightly, the amount of warping being indicated by gauges K. The rolls are then rotated and when the parts most chilled are in position where they will be in contact with the hot glass, as indicated by the gauges K, the glass is dumped on to the tables D.
