Flattening. - A method of flattening curved sheets or cylinders of glass consists in heating the glass to a suitable temperature and stretching it until it is flat. The curved sheet A, Fig. 3, which may be supported either vertically or horizontally, is secured at one end to a bar b while the other end is attached to a weight f. When the glass is brought to a suitable temperature, the sheet open!s out and is stretched into a flat form by the weight f. A cylinder may be stretched by suspending it from a bar k, Fig. 6, and suspending weights from another bar k<1>. The curved ends of the stretched cylinder can then be cut away leaving two flat sheets D, D<1>. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), describes also a method of stretching a sheet by its own weight, and also by pressing it between vertical slabs or by passing it between rollers. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
