[Class 56] [Also in Group XXX] Relates to the method of supporting a glass sheet during the operation of tempering in which the sheet is suspended by tongs from an horizontal bar. According to the invention, not more than two of the tongs are suspended directly from the bar, the others being connected to pivoted arms so that the weight of the sheet can be distributed equally between all the tongs. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the sheet 1 is suspended by tongs 5 which are pivoted to the ends of arms 7. These arms are pivoted at their centres to the ends of arms 9 which, in turn, are centrally pivoted to the tong bar 4. In a modification, one end only of each arm 9 is pivoted to an arm 7, the other end carrying a tong which supports the sheet 1 directly. In another construction, shown in Fig. 9, the sheet is supported by tongs 16 connected directly to the tong bar 4, while one or more tongs 17 are connected to one or more pivoted arms 18 provided with balance weights 20. The weight 20 can be adjusted along its arm 18 until the weight of the sheet is correctly distributed, and the free end of the arm can be locked to a lug 22 depending from the bar 4. The tongs may be attached to the sheet and to the bar in such a way that they take up an inclined position and exercise pulls on the sheet which tend to keep it flat. Other tongs 25, attached to counterweighted levers 29, may engage the sheet at its ends or sides to assist in keeping it flat.
