Abstract
506,723. Tempering glass; cradles for lifting and lowering. GILT EDGE SAFETY GLASS, Ltd, GROTEFELD, A. W., and SHAW, J. J. Aug. 26, 1937, No. 23456. [Class 58] [Also in Group XXX] A device for supporting a glass sheet during tempering comprises a number of spaced abutments which are adapted to engage directly the periphery of the sheet without deforming it, the abutments being spaced apart along the sheet and'connected together movably in such a way that the supporting pressures applied to the sheet during the heating-operation are substantially equal for each abutment. The suspension devices may consist of cradles 30, Fig. 2, each composed of a pair of rods or wires 31 joined by a connecting piece 32 and provided with a slotted metal strip or abutment 33 for supporting the lower edge of the glass sheet. The upper edge of the sheet is supported by a similar strip 37 which is slidable along the wires 31. The connecting piece 32 is supported by a screw 39, which is pivoted by a pin 40 to a strip 29 that forms part of a movable carrier 28. In use, the sheet is placed in the cradles, as shown, and its position is adjusted so that the abutments 33 are symmetrical in relation to the centre of gravity of the sheet. The cradles can move relatively to one another in the plane of the sheet to compensate for any distortion of a cradle that may occur during heating. The abutments may be formed of porcelain or of other material of low thermal conductivity if desired. The cradles may be connected to the ends of a lever 45, Fig. 4, which is suspended at its centre from the bar 29 by means of a turn buckle 46. With larger sheets of glass, more than two cradles are used, pairs of cradles being supported'from levers 45 which, in turn, may be supported by secondary levers, a number of arrangements being shown as described in the Specification. A balance weight may be used with some arrangements to ensure equality of the pressures exerted by the abutments. The invention may be used with methods and apparatus described in Specifications 449,602, 449,864, 473,065, 473,066, and 506,724. Specification 506,787 also is referred to.
