[Class 56.] Rolling.-The rollers of an apparatus for producing sheet or plate glass are provided with a shield which covers so much of their surface that the hot glass comes into contact only with those portions of the rolls that are absolutely necessary for forming the glass sheets. The shield protects the rolls from the heat of the glass and deformation of the rolls is minimized. In the construction shown, the upper roller d of a double-roll machine, which comes most into contact with the hot glass, is provided with a shield S which extends over the surface of the roll. A similar shield may be used with the single roll that co-operates with a casting table, and also with the type of apparatus in which a stream of glass flows from a furnace into the pass between a pair of rollers. The shield is preferably made of metal and it may be covered on one or both sides with nonconducting material. Hot or cold air may be passed through the space between the shield and the roll, and the shield may be made hollow and cooled by the circulation of a fluid through its interior. The shield may be made adjustable relatively to, and together with, the rolls.
