Abstract
361,458. Stuffing-box substitutes. NICHOLSON, M. R., 123, West Street, Fareham, Hampshire. Sept. 5, 1930, No. 26613. [Class 122 (v).] The shaft 3 of a centrifugal gas washer is sealed where it passes through the top and base of the fluid container 18 by means comprising a skirt member 14, secured in fluidtight manner to the shaft, cooperating with an annular well 16 secured to the casing and containing a sealing liquid, e.g. mercury. To prevent adverse chemical action between the sealing liquid and washing fluid a layer of water or a solution of barium bromide or calcium chorlide may be interposed and in cases where the fluid is miscible with water a layer of tar may be added. The parts 14, 16 may be of cast or enamelled iron or glazed earthenware. A deflector 22 may be arranged over the seal to prevent access of the washing fluid.
