Abstract
Sulphurized hydrocarbons and their derivatives.--The process of the parent Specification in which unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons containing more than 8 carbon atoms are treated with a sulphurizing agent is modified by using as starting materials (1) halogenated paraffin hydrocarbons containing at least 8 carbon atoms; (2) conversion products of polyhalogenated derivatives of higher paraffins obtained according to Specifications 339,962, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], and 343,948 by the action of ammonia or alkalies thereon, so far as they are unsaturated and still contain replaceable halogen. In examples (1) a trichlorinated paraffin (from hard paraffin and chlorine) is autoclaved with alcoholic potassium hydrosulphide; the product is unsaturated and contains two --SH groups; (2) the starting material of (1) is autoclaved with aqueous potassium hydrosulphide; two products may be isolated; (3) soft paraffin is chlorinated and the product heated with sodium hydrosulphide in methyl alcohol; an unsaturated product free from chlorine and containing three --SH groups is obtained which gives a light brown elastic product when heated with sulphur; (4) hard paraffin is chlorinated and autoclaved with aqueous sodium sulphide; the product obtained contains one chlorine atom, two --OH groups and one sulphur atom in the molecule; when autoclaved with alcoholic potassium hydrosulphide it yields a chlorine free product; a similar product to the latter is obtained by autoclaving the first reaction product (without isolation) with potassium hydrosulphide; (5) chlorinated paraffin oil is autoclaved with aqueous alcoholic sodium tetrasulphide; an unsaturated thin oil is obtained; finely powdered sodium tetrasulphide alone or mixed with potassium hydrosulphide and alcohol may also be used; (6) the product obtained by treating trichlorinated soft paraffin with caustic soda is heated in an oil-bath with sulphur or (7) with alcoholic potassium hydrosulphide in an autoclave and the product of the latter reaction heated with sodium tetrasulphide; (8) the product obtained by heating hexachlorinated hard paraffin with ammonia in methanol is autoclaved with alcoholic potassium hydrosulphide, or with (9) sodium tetrasulphide in cyclohexanol; (10) the hydroxylated product obtained from heptachlorinated hard paraffin and aqueous potassium carbonate is autoclaved with alcoholic sodium hydrosulphide; (11) the product obtained from trichlorinated hard paraffin and caustic soda solution is heated with anhydrous sodium sulphide in alcohol in an autoclave; (12) trichlorinated hard paraffin is heated with sulphur in an oil-bath. Specifications 279,406, 302,270, 302,399, and 314,524, [all in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], also are referred to.
