Benzanthronyl mercaptans, sulphides, and disulphides are obtained by acting on halogen., nitro-, or halogen-nitro-benzanthrones, or derivatives thereof other than methyl derivatives, with sulphur or certain sulphur compounds; in the case of halogen benzanthrones, inorganic sulphides, or arylmercaptans, or benzanthrone mercaptans are used, while for reaction with nitrobenzanthrones sulphur or benzanthrone mercaptans are employed. A diluent may be present. Benzanthronyl-disulphides or mercaptans can be converted into benzanthronyl-sulphide by heating with copper or other agent which will take up sulphur, or, in the case of the mercaptans, by simply heating alone or with a diluent. According to examples the following compounds are obtained :-Bz1-benzanthronyl mercaptan from brombenzanthrone (Specification 20837/06, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.]), and sodium sulphide; Bz1-benzanthronyl sulphide from brombenzanthrone and sodium polysulphide, or from Bz1-benzanthronyl mercaptan sodium salt and Bz1-brom- or Bz1-nitro-benzanthrone, in the latter case in presence of sodium bisulphite; a mixture of Bz1-benzanthronyl mercaptan and sulphide from Bz1-nitrobenzanthrone and sulphur in trichlorbenzene, the two products being separated by extracting the mercaptan with sodium sulphide solution from which it is reprecipitated as such by addition of salt or as the corresponding disulphide with a current of air; 2- or Bz1-benzan throne-thio-p-cresylether from 2- or Bz1-chlorbenzanthrone and p-thiocresol; Bz1-benzanthronyl sulphide by boiling Bz1-benzanthonyl disulphide with copper bronze and naphthalene or with phenol or an arylamine, or by heating Bz1-benzanthronyl mercaptan to 300‹ C. in absence of air.
