Abstract

A benzanthrone is treated with a sulphur halide, preferably in presence of a suitable solvent and a substance promoting the reaction, in order to obtain benzanthronyl sulphides, and intermediate products which can be converted by alkalies or alkali sulphides into benzanthronyl mercaptans and benzanthronyl sulphides. Benzanthronyl mercaptans can be converted in the usual manner into derivatives such as benzanthronyl disulphide, benzanthronylmethylthioether, or benzanthronylthioglycollic acid. According to an example, benzanthrone is heated in chlorobenzene with sulphur chloride and a little iodine; after removing the solvent the residue is extracted with sodium sulphide or alcoholic alkali, benzanthronyl sulphide remaining; from the solution the sodium salt of benzanthronyl mercaptan is salted out; the sodium salt treated with acids yields the free mercaptan, with dimethyl sulphate the methylether, and with sodium chloroacetate the corresponding thioglycollic acid; the mercaptan yields benzanthronyl disulphide when oxidized.
