Abstract
Higher fatty acid derivatives containing sulphur are prepared by treating with solutions of sulphides or polysulphides polyhalogenated fatty acids containing more than 8 carbon atoms in the molecule or their esters or amides or conversion products still containing halogen obtained according to Specifications 339,675, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], and 340,011, by treating polyhalogenated higher fatty acids with alkaline acting reagents or solutions of ammonia in organic solvents. The halogens are in part replaced by mercapto and hydroxy groups, and in part split off with the formation of double bonds. The reaction may be effected under pressure, and the products yield salts on being salted out, which are typical sulphonated soaps. In examples, (1) trichlorpalmitic acid, hexachlororicinoleic acid and heptachlorstearic acid (all prepared from the parent acids and chlorine as described in Specification 336,623, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]), are treated with aqueous solutions of crystallized sodium sulphide: (2) hexachlorstearic acid is treated with an aqueous solution of sodium tetrasulphide, the chlorinated stearic acid being prepared from a solution of the parent acid in carbon tetrachloride and chlorine: (3) a tetrachloroleic acid, similarly prepared, is treated with aqueous potassium hydrosulphide: (4) oleicacid chloride is treated with ethylaniline to form oleic ethylanilide, and a hexachlorinated derivative thereof is prepared by treating its solution in an organic solvent with chlorine. The hexachloroleicethylanilide is heated with alcoholic potassium hydrosulphide in an autoclave: (5) a conversion product obtained according to Specification 340,011 from a pentachlorstearic acid and caustic soda is heated with aqueous sodium sulphide.
