Abstract
Cholesterol is obtained from cholesterol-containing materials, e.g. brain, spinal cord, fish offal or wool grease, by treatment with a solvent for cholesterol, e.g. ethyl acetate, filtering off the insoluble by-products if desired, refluxing the solution containing the cholesterol with succinic acid, allowing or causing the addition compound thus formed to crystallize from the liquid and subsequently decomposing the addition compound to recover the cholesterol. The decomposition of the addition compound may be effected with dilute alkali, e.g. caustic soda, sodium carbonate or sodium acetate, or by refluxing with a hydrocarbon liquid, e.g. benzene, toluene or petroleum ether. Detailed examples are given.
