333,946. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 25, 1929. Chloro- and bromoacetylenes and derivatives thereof are produced by the direct replacement of hydrogen combined with triply linked carbon atoms by means of chlorine or bromine by subjecting the acetylene compound to the action of an aqueous solution of a salt of hypochlorous or hypobromous acid, advantageously with the addition of an excess of free alkali. Examples are given of the preparation of dichloro-acetylene, dichlorodiacetylene, dibromo-acetylene, dibromodiacetylene, bromo- and chloro-propiolic acid, 1- bromoacetinyl-cycloliexanol-1, and diethylbromoacetinyl carbinol. The preparation of tetrabromoethylene from dibromoacetylene and a solution of bromine in chloroform is also referred to.
