Abstract

253,623. Harold, C. H. H. March 23, 1925. Treating-materials. - A sterilizing-agent, particularly for treating water and sewage, is prepared by the interaction of aqueous chlorine and an ammonium salt, the ratio of the quantities of the substances taken being from 0.25-2.0 gms. of ammonium to 1 gm. of chlorine. On allowing to stand at ordinary or at elevated temperature, the solution becomes colourless and a relatively concentrated solution of mono or dichloramine or of a mixture thereof is obtained. According to examples, solutions of ammonium monohydrogen phosphate, commercial carbonate. chloride, sulphate and nitrate with aqueous chlorine are employed. With salts of ammonium containing a strong acid radicle, e.g. ammonium chloride, the reaction with chlorine is slow but the chloramine produced is quite stable, while with ammonium salts having a weak acid radicle, chloramine is rapidly produced but is rapidly decomposed unless it is in excessively dilute solutions. Preferably, therefore, a salt containing a moderately strong acid radicle, namely diammonium hydrogen phosphate, is employed. As suitable ammonium salts, however, the oleate, acetate, borate, formate, tartrate, citrate and lactato are also mentioned.
