Abstract

552,319. Ethylene; ethylenechlorhydrine ; electrolysis. SHAWINIGAN CHEMICALS, Ltd. Sept. 1, 1941, No. 11121. Convention date, Sept. 10, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In a continuous process for the production of ethylene by the reaction of chromous chloride, acetylene and hydrogen chloride in aqueous solution, the chromic chloride which is simultaneously produced is reduced in the cathodic compartment of an electrolytic cell in order to recover the chromous chloride. A solution of hydrogen chloride is passed through the anodic compartment and the resultant chlorine used to produce alkalihypochlorite solution which yields ethylenechlorhydrin with the ethylene. In the Figure, acetylene reacts with hydrochloric acid and chromous chloride in a reactor 15 which receives aqueous chromous chloride from a vessel 11 after passing through pump 12 and hydrogen chloride absorber 13. The aqueous chromic chloride from the reactor 15 passes to the cathode of the cell 18. A second hydrogen chloride absorber 18 is used to maintain the concentration of a solution of hydrogen chloride which is circulated to the anode compartment of the cell 18. Alkali hypochlorite is formed in a vessel 26 with the chlorine from the anode and is passed to a reactor 25 which receives ethylene from the reactor 15. In a modified form of apparatus, a mixture of ethylene and acetylene produced in the reactor 15 is passed to a second circulating system comprising reactor, electrolytic cell and absorber as before, the chlorine ion present in the second circulating system being in excess of stoichiometric requirements. Specification 544,608, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
