[Class 82 (ii).] An upward current classifier is combined with the sand washing apparatus described and claimed in Specification 14014/14, [Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &c.], in which the material under treatment is passed through a rotary washer into a series of rotary screens through the finest of which washed sand and water pass into the pockets of a decanting drum in which the sand is separated from the water, the upward current classifier being placed between the screens and the decanting drum. Material passing through the finest screen i of a sand washer k falls on to a shoot m arranged in an elutriator h, the sand falling through an upward current of water to a discharge b controlled by a shutter q and leading to a shoot r which delivers the sand to the decanting drum. The elutriator is funnel shaped having side walls sloping tangentially to the screen i one wall being elongated at l to remove the material from the upwardly moving side of the screen, a sloping bottom plate g with upturned side portions shaped to form a tapering shoot for the material delivered thereon by the shoot m and a triangular end wall a containing the discharge b and terminating in a wide overflow n situated over an elongated aperture d in a waste pipe p. The upward flow of water is introduced through apertures c in the upturned side portions of the bottom plate g.
