[Class 82 (ii).] Rotary apparatus for washing sand, gravel or other materials comprises a plurality of imperforate washing cylinders mounted round a common axis at equal distances therefrom, the material to be washed being fed into a cone-shaped mouth common to all the cylinders from which it is passed up the cylinders by feeding devices, e.g. spiral screws, divided screws, or inclined plates, during which passage it is washed by water sprays from perforated pipes, or pipes provided with nozzles, longitudinally disposed in the cylinders. Imperforate cylinders a, Figs. 1 and 2, arranged round a common inclined axis, are secured at their ends to plates b, the lower of which is connected by a casting c to a solid shaft d mounted in bearings e while the other is connected to a hollow shaft g mounted in bearings i and connected through a stuffing-box w to a water supply pipe v which preferably contains a strainer or filter. The hollow shaft g is rotated by means of a bevel wheel u and is provided with radial pipes p which terminate in fittings carrying perforated pipes q extending longitudinally inside the cylinders a. The material to be washed is fed through a shoot l to a cone-shaped mouth k attached to the lower plate b and passes on rotation of the apparatus through apertures in the plate b to the cylinders a up which it is carried by screws m. The apparatus may be also adapted for screening the material, in which case the cylinders a are surrounded by screens 1 and the material passes through openings n at the upper ends of the cylinders into the space between the cylinders and the screens in which it is again washed by water sprays from perforated pipes 3 connected through tubes 2 to the fittings on the water pipes p. Material passing through the screens is directed by plates 6 on to the ground or into a receptacle, larger particles being discharged at the lower end 7 of the screens. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, for washing only, the cylinders a are secured only to one end plate b and are open at the upper end, the water for washing being supplied by a pipe 10 to a water box 8 mounted on the casting c and provided with scoops 11 corresponding in number to the number of perforated pipes q and shaped so that as the water box rotates they pick up water and deliver it when in their highest position to the pipes q which extend from the water box into the cylinders a. The screws m may be replaced by inclined plates 16 fixed to the inner walls of the cylinders by supports 17, Fig. 6, and the cylinders may be mounted on a hollow shaft formed by arcuate shaped plates 14 separated by distancepieces 15.
