[Class 82 (ii).] Material such as sand and gravel to be washed is fed into a rotating perforated drum partly submerged in a water trough, the larger particles being discharged from the washing drum into a rotating perforated rinsing drum, coaxial with the washing drum, where they are sprayed with water. The material is fed by a shoot 1 to a perforated washing drum 2 to the rear end of which is attached a smaller drum 4 provided with a rinsing spray pipe 5. The drum 2 is mounted on bearing rollers 18 and the drums are rotated by means of worm gearing 21, 23. The larger particles, e.g. gravel, are passed along the drum 2 by vanes 2<1> and pass at the rear end of the drum into one or more openended boxes 3<a>, 3<c>, attached to the drum, by which they are raised, drained, and deflected into the rinsing drum 4 where they are sprayed and discharged either by making the drum 4 divergent or, as shown, by providing vanes 41. The finer particles, e.g. sand, pass through the perforations of the drum 2 into a trough 10 along which they are conveyed by vanes 24 on the outside of the drum. The sand reaching the end of the trough 10 falls into a recess 12 and is forced by a jet of water from a nozzle 14 up a tubular passage 13. The sand banks up at 15 and is discharged by wipers 16 attached to the outside of the drum 4. The water from the rinsing spray pipe 5 and the jet nozzle 14 mixes in the space 7 and passes back along the drum 2 and the trough 10 to an overflow 11.
