Abstract

360,318. Making pressed glassware. MACBETH-EVANS GLASS CO., Charleroi, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Sloan, T. H. ; Charleroi, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) March 5, 1931, No. 6890. Convention date, April 9, 1930. [Class 56.] A method of making pressed ware consists in placing in a mould a mass of molten glass of less volume than the articleforming cavity between the mould and its plunger. The glass when pressed does not extend to the outer edge of the cavity, and an article formed in this way has an edge which is rounded and free from seams or cracks. A mould for pressing plates is shown in section in the Figure. The plunger 3 has a number of legs 6 which make contact with the rim 7 of the mould body 1 and ensure that the plates are of uniform thickness. The edge 5 of the moulding-cavity is open to the atmosphere to allow air to escape from the mould so that it does not restrain the lateral flow of 'the glass. The plunger may be cooled to prevent it from sticking to the pressed article, or the mould and plunger may be made of different metals having different heat conductivities.
