Abstract
359,640. Speed and revolution-direction indicators. CHADBURN'S (SHIP) TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. and BAMFORD, A. C., Cyprus Road, Bootle, Lancashire. Sept. 8, 1930, No. 26712. [Class 106 (iii).] Relates to apparatus in which one pointer indicates revolutions per minute and another on the same dial indicates direction of movement, the motion being transmitted to the speed pointer by a unidirectional drive, and consists in employing speed indicating apparatus in which the pointer is operated by the armature of a magnet the spindle of which is driven through a unidirectional mechanism. The spindle 2 is driven from the part the speed of which is desired through a clutch 1 and drives through gearing a spindle 10 carrying a magnet 6. The armature 7 of the magnet which is moved against the influence of a spring (not shown) is carried by a separate spindle 11 in line with the spindle 10 and on which is the speed pointer 3. The gearing between spindles 2 and 10 comprises an oscillating frame 13 loose on the spindle 2 and carrying two toothed wheels 14 meshing with a toothed wheel 15 fast on the spindle 2. One of the wheels 14 is adapted to drive a pinion 16 on a spindle 17 driving the spindle 10 through bevel wheels 18, 19, while the other wheel 14 is adapted to drive the pinion 16 through the medium of a wheel carried by the frame 8 and in permanent mesh with the wheel 16. Thus when the shaft 2 is rotating in one direction one of the wheels 14 is effective and when the shaft is reversed the frame 13 is swung due to friction of the gearing so that the other wheel 14 is effective, the spindles 17 and 10 always rotating in the same direction. A pointer 4 on a spindle 22 driven through bevels 23 indicates direction of rotation and by counting the revolutions of this pointer and using a stop watch the speed may be checked.
