Counters with reducing-gear; associated counters, trip and total and like.-A counter or distance indicator for vehicles &c. of the type having concentric scales, and pointers driven continuously through epicyclic reducing-gear, comprises a pair of crown-wheels a, b, having slightly different numbers of teeth, driven in opposite directions either directly or through a similar pair of wheels c, d from a wheel v, and a planet pinion l carried by an arm m on a sleeve e frictionally engaging and driving the primary pointer spindle f. An arm p fast on the sleeve e carries a loose planet pinion n gearing with wheels r, q differing slightly in the number of teeth, the wheel r being fixed to the dial plate k and the wheel q fixed to a sleeve s carrying the secondary pointer t. The wheel q is forced by a spring u against the face of the wheel r to set up sufficient friction to prevent vibration of the pointens. The primary pointer spindle f is slotted and slightly expanded in the sleeve e, and may be turned by a knob i to reset the pointer to zero. The wheel v is driven from a wheel 3 on its boss, engaging a wheel 2 on a short shaft y to which a flexible shaft 5 is coupled by a screwed union 6. In a modification, Fig. 4, the flexible shaft is coupled to the shaft 20 of the wheel v, and the spindle f may be turned for re-setting by means of a knob i on a shaft 33 geared to the spindle. The flexible shaft may be driven by a star-wheel and roller on one of the road wheels, and for a motor cycle the counter may be clamped to the handle-bars. In the case of a motor-car the counter may be secured to the dash-board by a flange 37, Fig. 4. According to the Provisional Specification the secondary pointer may be driven by a single toothed wheel on the sleeve of the primary pointer engaging a star-wheel on a pinion meshing with a wheel loose on the primary spindle and carrying the secondary pointer.
