Abstract

201,093. MacLean, A. D. Nov. 28, 1922. Variable-speed gearing upon motor vehicles is provided with means for indicating the relative speeds of the teeth of different gears so as to facilitate changing speed. A single pointer 27 on its spindle 26 is connected through speedometer mechanism and a flexible shaft 25 to a gear 23 on driving-shaft 2 of the speed gear. The propeller shaft 3 is connected through flexible shaft 20 and speedometer mechanism to an arbor 21, to which are adjustably fixed pointers 28 - - 31, which give indications of the tooth speeds of members of the speed gear. Coincidence of the pointer 27 with one of the others indicates a speed change which can be made without shock. The scale 36 is graduated in miles per hour and also in revolutions of the engine.
