Abstract

767,893. Speedometers. JOAO, M. March 7, 1955 [March 9, 1954], No. 6617/55. Class 106 (3). The instantaneous speed of a motor vehicle is checked by a mechanism of the kind comprising a watch with a first auxiliary hand driven through a disengageable variable friction drive by the means driving the vehicle milemeter, a second auxiliary hand coaxial with the watch hands and the first auxiliary hand being provided, the second hand being positioned by the control knob adjusting the ratio of the variable friction drive and showing on a scale on the watch dial the speed at which it is desired to run. The first auxiliary hand is driven by a pulley 37, Fig. 5, shaft 36, gear 35, shaft 33, gear 32, gearing 9, 11, shaft 12, friction gearing 14, 16 and shaft 17, Fig. 3, and may be set in register with the minute hand by rotating knob 5. The disc 16 is normally urged into contact with the disc 14 by a spring 19 but may be disengaged by a lever 22 acting on the end 21 of the spindle 17 of the disc 16 and operated by a knob 7. The disc 14 is mounted on a sleeve 13 rotating with but slidable axially on the shaft 12 and the drive ratio is varied by moving the disc 14 over the face of the disc 16 by means of a link 25 engaging the sleeve 13 and secured to a worm 26 slidable longitudinally on a rod 27 by rotation of a gear 30 by means of the knob 6. As the knob 6 is rotated to move the gears 14, 16 to the drive-ratio required for the pre-set speed of travel, worm 26 also drives gear 28 controlling the position of the second auxiliary hand.
