988,764. Variable-speed control; securing switch-arms on shafts. SCHAUBLIN S.A. March 20, 1963 [March 22, 1962], No. 11057/63. Headings F2D and F2U. [Also in Divisions B3 and H2] Continuously-variable ratio gearing for the drive of a lathe &c. spindle 6, Fig. 1, shown as expanding-pulley gearing 3, 5 between a constant-speed electric motor 1 and the spindle, is controlled by an auxiliary electric motor 15 driving through gears 7 to a screw 7a rotated to adjust the effective diameter of the driving pulley 3, the auxiliary motor also driving through helical gears 29 and a chain-andsprocket train 13, 14 to a rotatable speed-ratio indicating drum 8 carrying two adjustably positioned arms 18, 19, Figs. 2, 3, each coacting with an associated switch 25, 26 in the feed circuit of the auxiliary electric motor. The two arms 18, 19 are provided with pointers indicating on the scale of the drum 8 a pre-selected ratio. Buttons (not shown) are provided for the two switches 25, 26, which may thus be closed by hand, to cause the auxiliary electric motor 15 to rotate one way or the other, thus causing a change in ratio to be effected, the rotation of the auxiliary motor continuing until the arm 18 or 19 has turned sufficiently far to open the previously closed switch. Securing switch arms together.-The arms 18, 19, Figs. 2, 3, are fast at the ends of shafts 16, 20 journalled within the hub 8a of the drum 8, the remote ends of the two shafts carrying discs 17, 21 mounting pointers 23, 24 coacting with the ratio indicating scale on the drum 8. The pointers 23, 24 &c. may be adjusted circumferentially relative to the drum by slackening a nut 22.
