Abstract

924,114. Expanding-wheel gear. KILLING- WORTH ENGINEERS Inc. Nov. 2, 1961, No. 39326/61. Class 80 (2). Expanding-pulley gearing for industrial sewing machines comprises an electric motor shaft 10, Fig. 2, fast upon which is a pulley 16 connected by a V-belt 70 to a multiple pulley 40, Fig. 4, having two outer fixed flanges and an axially slidable inner flange 43, a second V- belt 71 connecting the multiple pulley to a second multiple pulley 39 of similar construction in turn drivingly connected by a third V- belt 72 to a driven double pulley 17 coaxial with and rotatable upon the hub of the pulley 16, the multiple pulleys rotating upon axles carried at the ends of arms 32, 33 connected by a strut 49 and together turning upon a pivot pin 26 to vary the gear ratio when a hand wheel 67, Fig. 3, having a screw-and-nut connection 57 with a control rod 58, Fig. 4, is rotated, a bracket 21 carrying the pivot pin 26 and itself turning at one end 22 in a casing 20 when a nut 25 at the other is slackened to permit sliding of an associated bolt through an arcuate slot 23 in the casing. The tension in the V-belts 70, 72 can thus be adjusted. One end of the strut 49 co-operates through a slot 50a with a bolt on the arm 32 and permits adjustment of the tension in the belt 71 between the multiple pulleys by slackening the associated nut of pointer 68 fast with the strut 49 indicates the selected ratio.
