Abstract
788,010. Drilling- and screwing-machines. HONSBERG, A., [trading as HONSBERG, GEB.]. May 13, 1955 [June 21, 1954], No. 13914/55. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a drilling-, boring- and screwing-machine wherein the main spindle 5, in a sleeve 6 or carriage, is fed by a pinion 20 engaging a rack 8 on the sleeve or carriage, the pinion is driven through an epicyclic gear 15 at a speed which depends on the rotational speed of the spindle. The epicyclic gear may also be driven independently of the spindle through a rapid-traverse motor 10 and the epicyclic gear is constituted by spur wheels of which a pair of planet wheels 17, 18 are integral with each other and mounted in a carrier 14 driven through change-gears 13 from the main spindle, the wheels 17, 18 having slightly different numbers of teeth and meshing with sun-wheels 19, 21, of which 19 rotates feed pinion 20, and 21 may be driven by motor 10. The hub of the sun-gear 19 constitutes feed pinion 20 and is rotated about the shaft 22 of the sun-gear 21, which is held stationary during the feed stroke by an irreversible worm gear 23 in the drive from the rapid-traverse motor 10 and a brake 26 on the motor shaft 25. Alternatively, if the rapid-traverse drive is omitted, shaft 22 is held stationary by a plate 50, Fig. 5 (not shown), in place of the worm-gear 23. The feed drive for the planet carrier 14 is from a belt pulley 3, on the spindle 5, which is driven by the sliding armature spindle motor 1, the drive including an irreversible worm-gear 12 between a gear 11 engaging the pulley 3 and the change gears 13. The brake 26 comprises pivoted shoes 28, 29, Fig. 4, operated by a lever 35 controlled by an electromagnet 37 in series with motor 10. Energization of the electromagnet causes the ball end 34 of lever 35 to release the brake against the influence of springs 27, 38. The spindle may be traversed rapidly by running the motors 1, 10 simultaneously. A plate 9, carried by the sleeve 6 and which may support a number of tool spindles driven by the spindle 5, has one or a pair of guide rods 39 engaging the machine casing 7, rod 39 also being screw-threaded to engage a cam 40 operating switches 42-44, the position, or the actuating elements of which, may be adjustable. Switch 42 stops the machine when the spindle has been retracted; switch 43, which is operated through a pair of levers 45, 48 on a shaft 46, changes the spindle-traverse from rapid traverse to feed; switch 44 disconnects the drive or reverses the direction of traverse. The maximum depth-of-feed is equal to the sum of the width of switch-operating lever 45 and the length of the cam 40, so that lever 45 is not released by the cam during a feedstroke.
