Abstract

In the manufacture of tungsten wire consisting of long crystals, drawn tungsten wire is passed continuously through a single heating zone of a temperature exceeding 2000 DEG C. in order to effect crystal transformation at a speed that is several times the speed of crystal growth, i.e. at a speed greater than 10 metres per hour. For ordinary filament wires, the speed is usually 100-300 metres per hour. In an example a tungsten wire of 0,17 mm. diameter is drawn at a speed of 2 metres per minute over two tungsten contacts which serve to supply the heating current and which are arranged at a distance of 30 cm. apart in an atmosphere consisting of three parts of nitrogen and one of hydrogen. The part of the filament between the contacts is heated to 2400-2600 DEG C.
