Abstract
In a method of manufacturing coiled coil filaments for electric incandescent lamps, tungsten wire, first wound on a primary mandrel, is then wound, together with its primary mandrel, on a continuous length of secondary mandrel, after which the secondary mandrel supporting the primary mandrel and the wire is drawn continuously through an oven which is maintained at a temperature so high that, if the wire were maintained at this temperature for one hour, it would re-crystallize completely, the duration of its stay in the oven, however, being so short that re-crystallization is not complete. An oven temperature between 1500 and 1600 DEG C. is generally suitable, and the duration of the heating between 5 and 60 seconds. In an example, the body is drawn through a molybdenum tube containing a hydrogen-nitrogen atmosphere and heated to a temperature of 1550 DEG C. by passing a current through it, the length of the oven and rate of drawing the body therethrough being such that the duration of heating is 12 seconds. The mandrels are then removed by solution in known manner.
