Abstract
In the manufacture of coiled-coil filaments for electric incandescent lamps, thermionic valves and the like, the primary coil is first wound upon a mandrel, and coil and mandrel are together wound closely upon a secondary mandrel, after which both mandrels are removed and the secondary coil is stretched between suitable clamps to separate its convolutions whilst it is heated to a temperature of 900 to 2200 DEG C. before being mounted in a lamp or the like. The primary coil may be heated to a temperature below 900 DEG C., for example, for 10 seconds in a reducing atmosphere at 850 DEG C. or for 30 seconds in air at 650 DEG C., before winding it into a secondary coil. The secondary coil may be similarly heated before the final heating, e.g. before the mandrels are removed. The final heating is carried out in an atmosphere of a reducing-gas such as a hydrogen-helium or hydrogen-nitrogen mixture, the duration of the heating being 30 seconds at a temperature of 1000 DEG C. or 5 seconds at 2000 DEG C. Mandrels of steel, molybdenum, brass, &c. may be used, both mandrels being removed in known manner.
