Filaments.-In the manufacture of long-crystal spiral filaments the wire is subjected to mechanical deformation at short intervals along its length before, during, or after spiralling, and the spiral is brought by heat treatment to the final crystal form. The deformations may be produced by means of a fluted roller or by hammering, or by flattening a spiral of circular section, with or without the mandrel wire, or by winding the wireon a mandrel of non-circular section; such a mandrel may be solid, as shown in Fig. 2, or built up of wires e, f, Fig. 6, of equal or different gauges, and these wires may be twisted together.
