Abstract
In the manufacture of coiled filaments, suitable for use in electric incandescent lamps, from drawn tungsten wire inclined to the formation of long crystals, the coiled filament material is subjected for a period of not more than half a second to heat-treatment at a temperature which is below the melting point of tungsten but not less than 2800 DEG C. The filament before this treatment may be subjected on a mandrel to a heat-treatment at a temperature below the recrystallization temperature, but not less than 1000 DEG C., e.g. about 1100 DEG C. or with or without a preliminary heating to 600-900 DEG C. When the double heating is used, the second heating is carried out after the removal of the material from the mandrel. The short heating at high temperature is effected by passing through the material a sudden surge of current either by supplying the current through a transformer of poor regulation, or by discharging a condenser through the filament, either directly or through a series inductance. The filament has a sag, in use, of less than 5 per cent, and the wire has a fine-grained structure with a most probable crystal size of from one to ten thousandths of a millimetre.
