Abstract
475,006. Destructible cores. LONN, E. I. Nov. 16, 1936, No. 31278. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1935. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XI] A triple spiral body or filament, especially for electric incandescent lamps for common illuminating purposes is wound upon successive mandrels of diameters so proportioned that the ratio of the diameter d of the filament to the core diameter D<1> of the primary spiral is within the limits 1:0À9-1À8, and the ratio of d to the pitch P<1> of the primary spiral is within the limits 1 : 1À6-2À2; the ratio of d to the core diameter D<2> of the secondary spiral is within the limits 1 : 3 -5À2, and its ratio to the pitch D<2> of the secondary spiral is within the limits 1: 5À4-7À8; while the ratio of d to the core diameter D<3> of the tertiary spiral is within the limits 1 : 8À5-19, and its ratio to the pitch P<3> of the tertiary spiral is within the limits 1 : 15-32. In an example, the ratio d : D<1> : D<2> : D<3> is 1 : 1À4 : 3À7 : 11, with corresponding pitch ratios d : P<1> : P<2> : P<3> having the value 1 : 1À8 : 6À5 : 26. All the spirals are preferably formed with the cores still retained in position, the choice of core material depending on the heat treatment required. Cores of refractory metal such as molybdenum are used when, together with the filament, they are heated to a temperature exceeding 1600‹ C., whereas the primary and secondary cores may be of steel, nickel or the like, and the tertiary core of refractory metal when a heat treatment at a lower temperature is given to eliminate mechanical stress, the first two cores being removed by acid before the final heating at high temperature and subsequent removal of the refractory core by drawing it from the completed filament. The spirals may be wound in different or similar directions ; in the example they are all in the same direction. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 456,760, [Group XI].
