Abstract
358,965. Raising sunken ships. ALBERT, H., 18, Winarskystrasse, Vienna. April 11, 1930, No. 11612. Convention date, April 15, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 68 (ii).] A float is released from a sunken ship, carrying with it an auxiliary line by means of which a lifting - device and chain are attached to the ship. As shown in Fig. 4, a. float f closes the aperture of a cuplike fitting b in the hull of a ship, and is released therefrom automatically by a time switch or other device, e.g. a cartridge e containing acids which, when water enters, destroy a zinc wire. The float rising to the surface, affords, with a signal light, a means for indicating the position of the ship. The crew of a rescue ship should then remove from the float the ends g, h of an auxiliary line i, which passes round a roller c. and fix one end to a coupling-device, Fig. 5, on a lifting-chain l. The other end of the line i is then drawn inboard until the coupling- device is drawn into the mouth of fitting b. As it enters, a pin or bar st is removed from the coupling-device by contact with the mouth of the fitting b ; springs on the pivot pin o then cause the jaws p, q to fly out and engage the under. side of the throat of the fitting. The sunken ship may then be raised by the lifting-chain l. In a modification, a single line i is used, and serves as a guide line down which a coupling-device, Fig. 8, is run down to the sunken ship. The frame of the device is formed with a cone-like body k, which facilitates the entry of the coupling into the body of the ship. The coupling moves on rollers y running on the auxiliary line i, moving either by gravity or by a propeller action.
