Abstract
251,775. Hylard, J. May 12, 1925. Life-buoy signals.-Relates to apparatus for indicating the presence of a person in the water by means of an electric lamp. A container 2, Figs. 1 and 3, is suspended from the neck of a wearer and preferably behind a life-belt &c. by tubular straps 1. The container carries a battery 5 held against contacts 14, 15 by a watertight lid 6 secured by a rotatable plate 9 engaging slotted plates 12. One wire 17 passes from the contact 14 through insulating cement 15<a> and through one of the straps 1 to the lamp 21<a>, Fig. 7, which is mounted midway of the strap so as to be at the rear of the neck. The wire is connected to a circular contact 20 in which the lamp is mounted. The return wire 25<a> extends from a contact 27 of the lamp through the opposite strap 1 to one of two contacts 25. The contact 15 is connected by a wire 24 to the other contact 25. When the device is immersed in the water, a float 29 in a portion 26 of the casing is raised so that the end 32 engages the contacts 25 and the circuit is completed. The float is normally held in the inoperative position by a pin 33, which is removable when necessary by a cord 33<a>. Holes to allow the escape of air in the top of the portion 26 may be made at such a height as to be covered by the float when engaging the contacts 25. The holes may be temporarily closed bv a, paper seal. The device may be attached to a lifebuoy or lifebelt.
