Abstract
124,062. Saunders, J. March 16, 1918. Buoys.-In a lifebuoy provided with one or more electric lamps which light automatically when the buoy is horizontal in the water, a dry-cell battery and a mechanical circuit making and breaking means are employed, the battery, switches, and leads being entirely enclosed in the body of the buoy. The buoy shown is provided on each side with a lamp h, and the battery c is arranged in a diametrically opposite chamber c' with cover c<2>. A watertight chamber i<1> accommodates a casing i enclosing the circuit-making means, which comprises swinging members k, Fig. 3, pivoted at k<1> and adapted, when the buoy is in the horizontal position, to swing over against contacts k<3> and thus complete a circuit through the lamp which is uppermost, the members k actuating the other lamp then being inoperative. When the buoy is in its normal vertical position, the members k' rest free of the contacts k<3>, as shown in Fig. 3. Preferably a pair of swinging members is provided for each lamp, and the connexions are duplicated to ensure the operation of the apparatus. Cork &c. a held together by a metal wire ring g, or a hollow metal &c. structure, may form the body of the buoy.
