[Class 106 (iii).] Periodic-counter and like speed indicators.-In a speedometer of the type set out in the parent Specification, a cam operates directly a single lever which slides a double-toothed crown wheel driven from the vehicle into engagement with one or other of the two transmissions. The spindle 1 carrying a cam 2 is driven from clockwork, the cam moving a lever 3 pressed into engagement with it by a spring 22<11> so as to slide the double-toothed crown wheel 4 on the squared spindle 12 into engagement with a pinion 25 gearing with a wheel 6. The latter carries a pin 9 engaging a pin 10 on a toothed wheel 8. A pin 15 on the other side of this wheel engages an abutment 14 on the axis 7 which drives the indicating needle 19 through gears 16, 17. The wheel 8 is held by a spring catch 22. This reading will be held while the cam switches the drive to the other and similar mechanism driving the wheel 8<1>. If the speed has increased, the pin 15 of the second gear will push the abutment 14 and move the needle on. If the speed has fallen, on the stop spring 22 being released, the wheel 8 is released and under the influence of the return spring 20d returns to zero. The stop spring 22<1> is now holding the wheel 81 and the reading. The stop springs 22, 221 are operated at appropriate times by the cam 2. The pinion 51 is acted upon by a spring 11 so that engagement by the wheel 4 is cushioned. The wheels 6, 6<1> and 8, 8<1> are constantly urged towards their zero positions by return springs, such as the spring 20d.
