Abstract

324,505. Stoecklin, C. Jan. 7, 1929. Periodic-counter and like speed indicators. - Relates to instruments of the periodic-counter type in which two indicating gear trains are disposed symmetrically with respect to a pinion driven from the shaft the speed of which is desired the pinion being carried by an oscillating lever and engaged and disengaged alternately with the gear trains by time-operated means; and consists in the provision of a single time driven cam or like member which controls the engagement of the pinion together with means for locking and releasing the gear trains. The shaft 1 transmits movement through a pinion 2 to a pinion 3 on the same shaft 36 of which is a toothed wheel 4 which may be swung into gear with a wheel 5 or 22 by means of an arm 27 oscillated by an eccentric 28 which turns about a shaft D by means of clockwork. The eccentric also acts on spring pawls 29, 30. The wheel 4 drives the wheels 5 during which the pawl 29 is released while the pawl 30 holds the wheel 15. In the next period of measurement the wheel 4 drives the wheel 22, the part 30 being released while the part 29 engages the wheel 5. The wheel 5 drives the pointer 39 by means of pins 19, 20 on wheels 5 and 7. The wheel 22 drives the pointer by pins 17, 18 on wheels 15, 22 and pin 13 of wheel 14. Springs 6, 9, 16, 23, 40 constantly tend to turn the wheel 5, pointer 39, wheels 15, 22, and 7 to their initial positions. In a modification, Fig. 4, the shaft 36 of the wheel 4 is carried by one arm of a double lever 41, the other arm 44 being of a springy nature to facilitate meshing of the gears and being provided with a ratchet 43 bearing on a time driven cam 45. A double leaf spring 50 rigid with the lever serves for locking and releasing the indicating gear trains. In a further modification, the pinion is constituted by a disc or wheel having teeth on both faces and loosely keyed to a shaft. It is moved by a lever to engage face teeth on the indicating gear train alternately. The lever carries locking means similar to the means 50.
