Abstract
1283555 Parking meter ROCKWELL MFG CO 27 Oct 1969 [28 Oct 1968] 52454/69 Heading G4V A clockwork assembly comprises a mainspring gear train 44 (Fig. 3) for driving a pointer over a time scale, and an escapement 42 including an escapement wheel 70 that is moved along a shaft 66 to engage or not the gear train 44 for timed or rapid de-energization respectively of the mainspring. As described for a parking meter, a scale (12) (Fig. 2, not reproduced) and pointer (14) are connected through a gear chain (20) to the winding shaft (25) of the mainspring, (36). Through the mainspring gear chain 44 (Fig. 3) the mainspring (36) is connected to a pinion 64 that is slidable and rotatable on the shaft 66. A washer 68, the pinion 64 and escapement wheel 70 are held in frictional drive engagement by a spring 72. An escapement lever 76 (Fig. 4) engages with pins 80 the escapement wheel 70, and has a V-shaped notch 82 for engaging a pin 84 on a balance wheel 86. Operation.-The mainspring (36) (Fig. 2) is wound up either manually after the insertion of a coin, or automatically by a coin-controlled mechanism as described in UK Specification 1,237,579. Simultaneously the pointer (14) is rotated by the gear chain (20) to indicate the purchased time. The mainspring (36) then unwinds at a rate determined by the conventional action of the oscillating balance wheel 86 (Fig. 4), lever 76, escapement wheel 70, and the mainspring gear chain 44, at the same time returning the pointer (14) towards its zero position. When a push-button 98 is pressed, the end 94 of a spring lever 88 slides escapement wheel 70 along the shaft 66 and out of engagement with the pinion 64 to disengage the mainspring (36) and mainspring gear chain 44 from the balance wheel 86 (Fig. 4) for rapid unwinding of the mainspring and returning of the pointer to zero. The rate of rapid unwinding is governed by the gear chain 44. Button 98 can be depressed by an authorized person by means of a tool (102, Fig. 2, not shown).
