Abstract

Mordant dyeing; printing.-Alizarine red dyeings and printings are obtained by applying the b sulphuric ester of alizarine or a salt thereof, such as the pyridine salt, together with a mordant, followed by a hydrolytic treatment, such as steaming. In examples (1) cotton is impregnated with a solution containing the ester, aluminium sulphate and calcium acetate, dried, impregnated with soluble oil and steamed under pressure, (2) cotton is printed with a paste containing the ester, British gum, acetic acid, aluminium sulphocyanide and calcium acetate, with or without soluble oil, and the prints are dried, steamed and soaped, and (3) silk is entered in a bath containing the ester and aluminium sulphate and, after boiling, calcium acetate is added to the bath; the silk is then rinsed in sodium arsenate solution and soaped at the boil. Alizarine-b -sulphuric acid ester is obtained by treating alizarine with a tertiary base-sulphur trioxide compound in the presence of a tertiary base. In an example, pyridine and pyridine-sulphur trioxide are used, the product being obtained as the pyridine salt.
