Abstract

Cellulose acetate, dyeing; printing.-Decorative effects are produced upon fabrics made of or containing cellulose acetate by applying one or more dyestuffs having an affinity for cellulose acetate and capable of forming insoluble complexes with metallic salts or oxides, before or after the local application of a metallic salt and/or oxide capable of forming an insoluble complex with the dyestuff or dyestuffs, steaming or ageing, and applying a reagent, such as a dilute acid, to remove the insoluble complex p where formed. Suitable dyestuffs are those of the oxazine series formed by condensation of nitrosodimethylaniline with gallic acid or its derivatives and applied, if desired, in the form of their leuco compounds, monoazo mordant dyes, e.g. Alizarine yellows, triphenylmethane mordant dyestuffs, and aminopolyhydroxyanthraquinone, having sufficient affinity for cellulose acetate, e.g. Alizarin Maroon. Suitable discharge or resist preparations are a thickened solution of zinc acetate, a suspension of zinc oxide with or without zinc acetate, or preparations containing salts or oxides of the alkaline-earth metals, e.g. calcium, or of the heavy metals, e.g. lead. Dyestuffs having affinity for the cellulose acetate and incapable of forming insoluble complexes with the metallic salts or oxides, e.g. aminoazo compounds or aminoanthraquinones, and, according to the Provisional Specification, Duranol, S.R.A., and Cibacet colours in general may be incorporated with the discharge or resist preparation. The following examples are specified. (1) A cellulose acetate fabric is printed with a thickened solution of zinc acetate, padded with a solution of Prune pure, preferably in the form of its leuco compound, steamed, passed through a weak bath of acidulated sodium bichromate, washed and dried to obtain a white pattern on a blue ground. (2) The Prune pure in (1) is replaced by Alizarine yellow R to obtain a white pattern on a yellow ground. (3) Dispersol fast red A is incorporated in the printing preparation in (1) or (2) to obtain a red pattern on a blue or yellow ground.
